Prevent home fires while on vacation

As temperatures rise in the UAE, you may be getting ready to take a long-awaited vacation. But before you pack up, make sure you aren’t neglecting the safety of the home and belongings that you’re leaving behind.

There is nothing more dangerous than a fire because it can strike anywhere, at any time. Fires have been known to start in empty homes too, so keep your home as safe from fire as you can with these preventive measures –

    • Turn off and unplug all electric appliances to protect your home from an electrical fire or power surge. This goes for the big appliances, like TVs, but also for your toaster, your coffee maker, and other small appliances.
    • The bathroom, with its combination of water and electricity, poses another fire safety challenge. Turn off and unplug all electric appliances off that are in the bathroom, before you leave.
    • Avoid overloading electrical outlets and running cords under carpets and furniture.
    • Replace electric cords that are cracked or frayed.
    • Use proper-sized fuses in the fuse boxes
    • Make sure you’ve turned the stove burner off before locking up
    • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, so that it attracts the attention of neighbours when you are away
    • Use the smoke alarm’s test button to check it every month and replace the batteries at least once a year.
    • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
    • Have working fire extinguishers in your home.
    • Leave the spare key to your house with someone you trust, who can be contacted if a fire breaks out when you are away.
