LED – the future of home/office lighting

If you thought light emitting diodes (LEDs) are just meant for flashlights and mobile phone displays, think again. Invented by Nick Holonyak, Jr., in the year 1962, this innovative lighting solution has today rapidly advanced and is hailed as the future of home/office lighting.

    The difference

LED is a semiconductor device that converts electricity into light. LED light bulbs are an environmentally friendly alternative to incandescent bulbs. This amazing lighting solution gives high-levels of brightness and intensity. LEDs require very low voltage, emit less radiated heat, have no UV rays and can be controlled and programmed easily. They are more efficient, durable, versatile and longer lasting.

LEDs emit light in a specific direction, unlike incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs, which emit light and heat in all directions. This helps LED lighting to use light and energy more efficiently in many applications.

It is anticipated that LED lights would command about 20% share of the global lighting market by 2020. This will be equivalent to 2/3rd of the revenue for LED.

    Types of LEDs

LEDs have remarkably advanced in the past decade. People are using LEDs for everything from lighting calculator screens, to lighting basketball arenas.

    LED Strips

These novel light strips are mounted on a super-thin flexible circuit board with an adhesive coating on the back. The usage varies from accent lighting for vehicles, to under cabinet lighting in the kitchen, and also for general lighting.

    LED Bulbs

LED bulbs are easy-to- use and easy-to- install! These bulbs are known for long life, energy savings and emit beautiful light. What’s more, they contain no mercury.

    Automotive LED Bulbs

Vehicles can also benefit from long-lasting, durable LED technology. LEDs turn on faster, have more color options, and they last longer than standard automotive bulbs.

    Benefits of LED Lighting

Efficiency: LEDs consume up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs. Due to the long LED lifespan, money and energy is also saved in maintenance and replacement costs.

Longevity: An LED even if used constantly will last for 7 years. They have a lifespan of up to 60,000 hours compared to 1,500 hours for incandescent bulbs.

Durability: LEDs are far stronger than traditional incandescent light bulbs or fluorescent tubes. They don’t use fragile components such as glass and filaments and have the capacity to withstand shock and extreme temperature.

Safety: LED lights don’t generally generate heat and can be touched even if it was left on for many hours. They reduce the potential for safety risks such as burns and fires.

    Applications

LEDs come in handy for a wide range of applications in residential lighting, traffic, aerospace industry, architectural, automotive, entertainment, gaming, etc. Their unique characteristics – focused lighting and compact size – gives best results in desk lamps, reading lights, night lights, security lights, spot lights, accent lights and lighting for signage.

The growing application possibilities of LED in general lighting have compelled the manufacturers to produce innovative LED lighting products. OSRAM opened its LED assembly plant in Wuxi, China, to expand its fully loaded LED capacities and also to strengthen its market position in the global LED market.

At Scientechnic, we provide solutions in the area of architectural lighting and give lighting designers the creative flexibility to design efficient and high performance lighting concepts.
