Aimed at fostering focus towards sustainable biosecurity, the two day conference had participation from Governmental and local authorities, private sectors and academic institutions both in the UAE and abroad. The goals of the conference were to discuss ways of promoting national awareness, capacity-building in biosecurity, creating opportunities to exchange expertise and science and to benefit from the potential of biosecurity. Dr. Bhupinder Hundle, Director Oxford Nanopore Technologies was one of the international speakers at the conference and his presentation highlighted the benefits of delivering portable, fast and simple sequencing for biosafety using Oxford Nanopore technologies. It focused on the MinION system that can be used for identification of numerous human, veterinary and food borne pathogens considered as bio risk and could be a threat to national security.
Oxford Nanopore simplifies not only the identification of such pathogens but also helps in the classification of new/unknown species, their source and eventually supports research for their eradication. The UAE Fourth Biosecurity Conference enabled effective communication between local, regional and international bodies in the areas of biosecurity while stressing on the regulatory role in biosecurity. The conference was also attended by His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi – the Minister of Climate Change and Environment for the United Arab Emirates, who heads the UAE Council for Climate Change and Environment, the National Committee of Biosecurity, and the Emirates Committee for Sustainable Environment Research.
