Languages of Light Series – James Cadisch

In conversation with James Cadisch, Development Director for the multi-award winning British lighting manufacturer, PHOS, on the issue of glare in lighting, and how it is one of the biggest contributors to visual discomfort.

As subject matter experts on lighting, Scientechnic Lighting Solutions connects with industry experts to get their insights on various topics and issues concerning lighting. Our ‘Languages of Light’ series is one such initiative.

In our recent encounter with James Cadisch, Development Director for the multi-award winning British lighting manufacturer – PHOS, we spoke on the issue of glare, and how it is one of the biggest contributors to visual discomfort. Do you agree?

Here is what James had to say:

In the natural world, we are not forced to look directly into the sun. It does

not flicker, nor is it static or made up of blue and green wavelengths. In the built environment, however, we are often over exposed with luminaries that mimic this unnatural scenario, and these lead to headaches, eye strain, epilepsy and more. Color rendering is also so poor that skin tones look totally unrealistic. Then there’s the issue of poor dimming that messes with the natural body clock. The eye therefore constantly struggles to adjust to these differing light levels and in turn can trigger a powerful stress response. At Phos, we take inspiration from nature, using biomorphism and biomimicry to create mechanisms and visual effects that please the human eye. With limitless customizable finishing options, our lighting is artificially as close as you can get to natural light, allowing you to design spaces just as nature envisioned.
